Olympia possesses perhaps the largest collection of ancient weapons, mainly from the Late Geometric and Archaic periods, that exists today in the world. The weapons were the most famous and fitting dedications to Zeus who granted victory to the competitors at Olympia, as well as in battle.
As votive offerings of cities from the spoils of victorious wars or from individuals from their personal armor, these weapons, apart from their contribution to the knowledge of the martial art of the ancient Greeks, their rich contribution to the illustration of myths and their own artistic value, thanks to the inscriptions, which are very often engraved on them, are also valuable and indisputable documents of historical events.
The hoplite's main weapon was his spear. The spear consists of three basic parts: the epidoratis or point, the pole and the saurotira. The spearhead, or head, was usually made initially of copper or brass and later of iron. It reached a total length of 30 centimeters and was mainly double-edged and leaf-shaped. It was the part that delivered the decisive blow to the opponent.
Leaf-shaped spearheads were a category of objects of social prestige.
Spearheads made of forged or cast metal did not show any notable development until the middle of the 13th century BC. Various parts of surviving wall paintings, which depict armed men, show that warriors carried spears in pairs.
